MARCH 23 – Contra Dance at the Grange

The Lookingglass Grange partners with Roseburg’s local Irish band, Irish Creme, and caller Woody Lane for another open to the public, Community Contra Dance, Friday, March 23, 2012 from 7pm to 10pm.

Contra dances are a place where people from many walks of life come together to dance and socialize.   People of all ages and lifestyles, including older children, are welcome.  No partner or previous dance experience is required.

An earnest attempt to describe: A dance caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides and teaches new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of  dances. Bringing a partner is not required; participants are coupled and dance a series of figures, or moves, with another couple for a short time. They then repeat the same figures with another couple, and so on. The figures are similar to those of old-time dancing. The figures are combined in different ways for each different set of music. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually carried out. This gives everyone an idea of what to expect so the movements can be easily executed. The caller leads the dances, so dancers are able to perform each movement to the music. Once the dancers appear to have mastered a particular dance, the caller may stop calling, leaving the dancers to enjoy the movement with music alone.

The Irish Creme Contra Dance Band will include fiddles, mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass, flute, and concertina Dance-friendly wood floor. Woody Lane is a professional dance caller you will not want to miss!  Good acoustics! Doors open at 6:45 P.M.  Refreshments will be available; casual and fun for all ages.  $5 per person at the Grange door.
